A bill of sale is strongly recommended: the SAAQ may request proof of transaction, and either party can be asked for it later. The bill of sale should include the VIN, year/make/model, sale price, date, odometer reading, and both parties' names, addresses, and signatures. Both parties need to provide the odometer reading either at the service outlet or during the SAAQclic process, and have to present a driver's licence or another official photo ID in person. For vehicles 14 years old or less (rule effective January 2025), QST on private sales is collected on the greater of the agreed selling price or the estimated value — so the number on the bill of sale should match. Until the transfer is completed, the seller may remain responsible for the vehicle — so it's in both parties' interest to finish promptly.
