Requirements in Alberta

In Alberta, private vehicle transfers happen at a registry agent using Alberta.ca's standard bill of sale — plus the vehicle itself and proof of insurance. The bill of sale should include full names and addresses of buyer and seller, VIN, year/make/model/colour, the sale price, the odometer reading at the time of sale, and signatures from both parties. Alberta has no provincial sales tax on private vehicle sales (and GST also does not apply on private-to-private transactions), so the price on the bill of sale is the primary transaction record for both parties. Plates stay with the seller — take them off before the buyer drives away — and the buyer has to arrange insurance before the registry will transfer the vehicle. Registry agents run a PPSA lien search as part of the transfer and an outstanding lien will block it until discharged. Most private transfers don't require a safety inspection, but a vehicle arriving from outside Alberta may need an out-of-province inspection before registering.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a bill of sale in Alberta?

Yes. Alberta registry agents use a standard bill of sale for private transfers — it should include the VIN, year/make/model/colour, sale price, odometer reading, date, and full names, addresses, and signatures of both parties.

Does Alberta charge provincial sales tax on a private vehicle sale?

No. Alberta has no provincial sales tax on private vehicle sales, and GST does not apply on private-to-private transactions either. The price on the bill of sale is the primary transaction record for both parties.

What happens to the plates when I sell?

Plates stay with the seller in Alberta — take them off before the buyer drives away. The buyer gets new plates from the registry agent when they register the vehicle in their name, and they need proof of insurance before the registry will transfer the vehicle.

Should the buyer run a lien search?

Alberta registry agents run a PPSA (Personal Property Security Act) lien search as part of the transfer, and an outstanding lien will block the transfer until it's discharged. Buyers can also run an independent search before handing over funds.

What if the vehicle is coming from outside Alberta?

Vehicles arriving from outside Alberta may need to pass an out-of-province inspection before the registry will register them. Factor in the cost and timing, and ask your registry agent about current requirements.

Can I sign the bill of sale online?

Yes. Download the PDF and upload it directly to an e-sign service. AutoBill never sees your document or personal details. See autobill.ca/guides/sign-bill-of-sale-online for steps.
