Requirements in Nova Scotia
In Nova Scotia, vehicle ownership transfers go through Service Nova Scotia's Registry of Motor Vehicles. The seller signs the Transfer of Ownership on the reverse of the Certificate of Registration, completes Part 1 of the Transfer of Title Certificate of Sale with vehicle details, sale price, and date, and submits the Notice of Sale to the RMV — the Notice of Sale is the seller's key protection because it breaks the ownership link even before the buyer registers. Plates stay with the seller and have to come off before the buyer drives away. The buyer has 30 days from the date of sale to register the vehicle and pay sales tax, which is calculated on the greater of the purchase price or the Canadian Red Book value — keep the price on the bill of sale accurate so both parties have the same number on record if the Registry cross-checks against Red Book.
