Requirements in Nova Scotia

In Nova Scotia, vehicle ownership transfers go through Service Nova Scotia's Registry of Motor Vehicles. The seller signs the Transfer of Ownership on the reverse of the Certificate of Registration, completes Part 1 of the Transfer of Title Certificate of Sale with vehicle details, sale price, and date, and submits the Notice of Sale to the RMV — the Notice of Sale is the seller's key protection because it breaks the ownership link even before the buyer registers. Plates stay with the seller and have to come off before the buyer drives away. The buyer has 30 days from the date of sale to register the vehicle and pay sales tax, which is calculated on the greater of the purchase price or the Canadian Red Book value — keep the price on the bill of sale accurate so both parties have the same number on record if the Registry cross-checks against Red Book.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a bill of sale required in Nova Scotia?

Yes. Service Nova Scotia uses the Transfer of Title Certificate of Sale together with the signed Certificate of Registration to transfer ownership — the bill of sale records the vehicle details, sale price, and date that the Registry needs at transfer.

What is the Notice of Sale and why does it matter?

The Notice of Sale is a portion on the Certificate of Registration that sellers sign and return to the Registry of Motor Vehicles. Submitting it is the seller's key protection — it removes the vehicle from your record even before the buyer registers, so it should not be skipped.

How long does the buyer have to register the vehicle?

30 days from the date of sale. After that, late fees apply, and the vehicle can't legally be driven on the buyer's insurance until it's registered in their name.

How is sales tax calculated on a private sale?

Sales tax on private vehicle sales in Nova Scotia is calculated on the greater of the purchase price or the Canadian Red Book value. The Registry will cross-check, so the number on the bill of sale should match what the buyer declares.

What happens to the plates and insurance?

Plates stay with the seller in Nova Scotia — take them off before the buyer drives away. Once the sale is signed and plates are off, cancel or transfer your insurance so coverage doesn't run on a vehicle you no longer own.

Can I sign the bill of sale online?

Yes. Download the PDF and upload it directly to an e-sign service. AutoBill never sees your document or personal details. See autobill.ca/guides/sign-bill-of-sale-online for steps.
