How to Create a Bill of Sale in Ontario
A bill of sale records the transfer of vehicle ownership between seller and buyer. In Ontario, you need one to register a used vehicle at ServiceOntario. Here’s how to create one.
What you need to include
Ontario doesn’t require a specific form, but your bill of sale should include:
- Vehicle: VIN (17 characters), year, make, model, colour, odometer reading, fuel type
- Seller and buyer: Full legal names and full addresses
- Sale: Sale date, sale price, and both parties’ signatures
AutoBill’s generator includes all of these fields and is designed to meet ServiceOntario requirements for private vehicle sales.
Steps to create your bill of sale
- 1Enter vehicle details. Add the VIN (17 characters, no I, O, or Q), make, model, year, colour, odometer reading, and fuel type.
- 2Add seller and buyer information. Full names and full addresses (street, city, province, postal code) for both parties.
- 3Download and sign. Generate your PDF, print two copies, and have both parties sign. Keep one copy each; the buyer uses theirs for registration.
The buyer must register the vehicle at ServiceOntario within 6 days of purchase. Besides the bill of sale, the seller must provide a Used Vehicle Information Package (UVIP). For full details, see Ontario.ca – Buy or sell a used vehicle.
