How to Sell a Car Privately in Yukon
Yukon Motor Vehicles lists the documents required to register a used vehicle after a private sale and gives the buyer 14 days to transfer. This checklist covers what the seller hands over, what the buyer needs, and how limited office hours in smaller communities affect timing.
Seller checklist (Yukon)
- Provide a signed and dated bill of sale. Yukon Motor Vehicles requires a signed and dated bill of sale to register a used vehicle. Include the VIN, year/make/model, sale price, date, odometer reading, and both parties' names, addresses, and signatures. Print two copies and sign both.
- Provide a copy of the current registration. The buyer must bring a copy of the previous owner's registration to register the vehicle in their name. Make a copy for the buyer and keep the original for your records until the transfer clears.
- Cancel or transfer your insurance. Once the sale is signed, contact your insurer to cancel or transfer the policy. Yukon enforces proof-of-insurance at registration, so gaps in coverage create liability on both sides.
- Confirm office hours in smaller communities. Yukon Motor Vehicles service availability can be limited in smaller communities. Remind the buyer to check hours at their local office before the 14-day transfer window closes.
Buyer steps after the sale
- Arrange valid insurance before driving the vehicle.
- Register the vehicle at a Yukon Motor Vehicles office within 14 days of the sale.
- Bring the signed bill of sale, a copy of the previous owner's registration, valid insurance, and ID.
- Yukon does not charge a territorial sales tax on private vehicle sales, and GST does not apply to private-to-private transactions (only to purchases from a GST-registered dealer). Private-to-private sales are tax-free at the counter.
- If the vehicle is coming from outside Yukon, ask Motor Vehicles whether an out-of-territory inspection is required before registration.
Additional notes
- Yukon's 14-day transfer window is generous compared to most provinces, but office hours in smaller communities are limited — don't leave the registration trip to the last day.
- No territorial sales tax makes Yukon relatively painless at the counter, but the buyer still needs insurance and the previous owner's registration in hand before Motor Vehicles will register the vehicle.
- If the vehicle is arriving from another jurisdiction, confirm with Yukon Motor Vehicles whether an inspection is required — requirements can change and an unexpected inspection will delay the 14-day window.
