How to Sell a Car Privately in Saskatchewan

SGI provides a Bill of Sale/Letter of Gift form so the sale includes enough detail for licensing and registration. This checklist covers what the seller signs, what the buyer brings to the motor licence issuer, and how PST and safety inspections fit in.

Seller checklist (Saskatchewan)

  • Complete and sign the SGI bill of sale form. The form includes the vehicle year/make/model, VIN/serial number, the sale price and date, the odometer reading, and signatures from both parties.
  • Complete the Transfer of Ownership on the registration certificate. The Transfer of Ownership section is on the Saskatchewan Certificate of Registration. Both the seller and buyer complete and sign it — this is what the motor licence issuer uses to move the vehicle into the buyer's name.
  • Cancel or transfer your SGI Auto Fund coverage. Once the sale is signed, contact SGI or your motor licence issuer to cancel the plate and coverage or move it to another vehicle. Leaving coverage on a vehicle you no longer own creates insurance and liability risk.

Buyer steps after the sale

  • Arrange insurance and plates through SGI or a motor licence issuer before driving the vehicle.
  • Bring the completed Bill of Sale and Transfer of Ownership to a motor licence issuer promptly to register the vehicle.
  • If the vehicle is being registered in Saskatchewan for the first time, or was most recently registered in another jurisdiction, a safety inspection is required before registration.
  • PST applies to private vehicle sales in Saskatchewan and is calculated on the greater of the purchase price or the vehicle's average wholesale value. The price on the bill of sale should match what the buyer declares at the motor licence issuer.
  • Run a VIN status check and lien search through a motor licence issuer or the ISC Personal Property Registry — SGI flags these as optional but strongly recommended before handing over money.

Additional notes

  • Saskatchewan charges PST on private vehicle sales based on the greater of the purchase price or average wholesale book value — keep the sale price on the bill of sale accurate so buyer and seller have the same number on record.
  • A lien on the vehicle will block the transfer until it's discharged. The ISC Personal Property Registry lookup is cheap and worth running before the buyer hands over funds.
